Every business needs a good website. The first thing most potential customers do when they are looking for a product or service is “Google” it. In other words they do an internet search. Google is the go to search engine for most people but there are many others.

If your website is set up properly then hopefully it will pop up in the search results and if the customer can easily find what they are looking for on your site they may contact you for a quotation or to place an order.

Setting a website up so that it is found and indexed by search engines is called website optimisation. If you have an existing website, perhaps one that you built yourself or had someone else put together for you it is possible that they have missed some key factors that can affect your sites ranking. An experienced web designer can advise you on how to optimise your website.

A good website needs to :

  • have quality content. It should provide useful, accurate information.
  • be easy to navigate.
  • load quickly.
  • be secure (see the padlock in the address bar when viewing this site).
  • be responsive (for viewing on tablets and phones as well as lap tops and pc’s).

There are many options available regarding layout and design.

A simple website can consist of a home page, an about page, a picture gallery and a contact page. Other websites can have a great number of pages. Some have a forum or a blog attached.

When considering what type of website you want you need to begin by deciding what your aim is. For example you may intend to sell product directly from the site. Alternatively it could be a site providing information or a site to generate enquiries for a service that you provide.

Next you will need to have a budget. How much can you afford to spend. The bigger and more complex the site is the more expensive it is going to be.
